Perplexity
Perplexity started as an AI search engine and is still best at that: you ask a question, it searches the web and answers with inline citations you can click to verify. Paid plans add a choice of frontier models and Perplexity Computer, which builds documents, apps and tools for you.
What it does now
- Cited answers from the web, plus premium data sources such as PitchBook, Statista and Crunchbase on some answers.
- Model choice. At the time of checking, the lineup included GPT-6.1 Sol, Claude Sonnet 5.5, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Grok 4.7, Kimi K3 and GLM 5.3 (the last two hosted in the US).
- Deep research on Pro, and “expert-level” research on Max.
- Perplexity Computer, which creates polished documents, apps and personal tools from a prompt.

Who it’s for
- Researchers, students and analysts who need sources they can check.
- People who want several frontier models in one subscription instead of paying OpenAI, Anthropic and Google separately.
